Notes From The Big Cheese

Are We Having Fun Yet?

It's Friday afternoon, 5 PM. You have just been informed that your dishwasher has called in sick, the order that you placed with Big Yank Foods has been lost along with your entire selections of aged meats, AND your significant other just called to say that after living with you for 10 years, they're calling it quits!

QUESTION: What do you do next?

Maybe your daily stress level is a bit different from the above but you surely do have your moments; we all do. However, what you do for an antidote is the most critical decision you will make on a daily basis. Perhaps the most amazing thing is that many folks don't even realize when they are in those stressful moments. They are so out of touch with their bodies that they are just plain numb to their physical sensations. Just waking up to your stress level can be an important first step. You look at your hands and they are shaking. Your heart is pounding

Hey, death is the one great equalizer. It certainly does put EVERYTHING into perspective, doesn't it?

OK, short of death and taxes, are there things on your list that con be easily eliminated? Sometimes just a simple schedule change can make a world of difference. Have to work with a difficult person and they are clueless of the stress they cause you? Wild horses could not bring you to confront them? Ask yourself another question: What is the worst thing that could happen if you informed them of the situation and that you were not willing to tolerate it any longer? Remember, your mental well being and a long life are at stake. Are you worth the risk? Fear is often the leading reason people mention for staying miserable. Is that true in your case and are you willing to pay the price? If so, more power to you. If not, then it's time to seek solutions.

Here is the good news. You do not have to tackle these problems on your own. There are more resources than ever before to help, some are even on the Web. The important thing is to do SOMETHING. After all , do you have anyone else to blame for your misery if you do not take these important first steps? What if your life depended on it? Think again. It does!

We are not without our "moments" here at Cornucopia. The food business is very stressful, without a doubt. A few years ago, it almost cost me my life.

I wanted to share what I know with you. There are folks out there that know a lot more about this subject.

If stress is a big part of your daily bread, I sincerely hope you can figure out how to turn down the heat in the kitchen!

Did you know that stress and related emotions like anger are now thought to be one of the leading causes of heart attacks and strokes?

How many years of your life are you willing to shave off due to stress?

Perhaps the first place to start is to sit down with a paper and pen and begin to identify the sources of your stress: who, what, where and when.

Next: ask yourself the following question:

If I die tonight which one of these things will still matter?
Seriously? You bettcha!
